Young man hangs himself to death in Sittwe; total suicide deaths reach to six in five months


A man in his 20s hanged himself to death in Sittwe on Friday making the number of deaths by hanging in the past five months to six in Rakhine State’s capital.


The deceased man who lived in Sittwe’s Ywagyi Myauk Ward was the 24- year old Ko Maung Win Hlaing. He was found dead at 8:30pm on 7 October.


Ywagyi Myauk Ward Administrator, U San Thein, told Narinjara that the wife found him dead hanging at their house.


“We have no idea when he died hanging. As only the two live in the house, his wife knew only when she arrived back. The wife was going to her mother’s house in the same ward,” he said.


The ward administrator said the man had been talking about hanging himself as the livelihood and business was not good.


“They are leading a hard life. They had to live renting someone else’ house. Husband had no job and tried to hang himself. He was showing the rope. This time he did it practically, said the ward administrator.


The other five people who hanged themselves to death in Sittwe in the past five months are Daw Ohnmar Khin from Mingan Wunhtan Block (3), the 30-year old U Kyaw Myat from Setyon Su Ward, 58-year old U Tun Tha Sein , 21- year old U Tun Aye Kyaw and 18-year old Ma Yu Yu Hlaing of Kanpyin village in Sittwe Township.


The six deaths occurred in five months from May to 7 October, according to figures from Myitta Yaungchi Foundation based in Sittwe.

War crime hangings at Landsberg in May 1946. With special thanks to Traugott Vitz for his help with this article. Over two days at the end of May 1946, 28 German war criminals were hanged at Landsberg am Lech prison in Germany (US War Criminals Prison No. 1). The Dachau concentration camp was liberated by two divisions of the U.S. Seventh Army on the 29th of April, 1945.  40 members of it staff were tried at the camp by a US General Military Court, presided over by Brigadier General John Lenz. The trials lasted from the 15th of November to the 13th of December 1945.   36 defendants received the death sentence. Human Rights Council denounced Tuesday the rising numbers of executions in Iran, including of people who received the capital punishment in connection with protests that have rocked the country. The top United Nations rights body approved a resolution voicing "deep concern at the reported surge in the number of executions, including of individuals sentenced to death in relation to their alleged involvement in the recent protests." The resolution, which also extended the mandate of the U.N. special rapporteur on the rights situation in Iran for another year, passed with 23 of the council's 47 members voting in favor. Another 16 abstained, and eight opposed the text, including China, Cuba, Pakistan and Vietnam. Iran's ambassador Ali Bahreini took the floor to slam the resolution as a "weaponization of human rights as a foreign policy tool."
