The following is the diary entry of 21-year-old Danish-German machine-gunner I.J.I Bergholt reporting on a charge across a bridge on the Western Front in May 1918. Translated by myself:

"We had been attacking since early morning, had advanced, withdrawn and advanced again, until we halted before a village. Our machine-guns were with us in the frontlines, so our men cleverly carried the heavy equipment. Suddenly the Infantry company with us in the frontlines was withdrawn. We were now alone and were to hold the front with the three machine-guns in our platoon.

We had a new Feldwebel as platoon leader, one of whom had been recruited from the Landwehr. The Feldwebel was a nice fella; but it was the first attack he participated in, thus his war skills were non-existent. He was what we referred to as an aging gentleman, perhaps around the 40s.

In front of us was a small stream, almost a brook. On the left a bridge across the stream. Ca. 200 meters ahead lay the village which was occupied by Englishmen - at least we believed so.

We were positioned quite well in front of the stream. Suddenly our Feldwebel had the ludicrous idea to cross the stream and dig in on the other side. This made my comrade Richard ask if it was the intention for us to win the war all by ourselves?

What our Feldwebel answered I don't recall, but he ordered the advance. Of course we thought we would go through the stream; but no, we were to cross the bridge. This was even more ludicrous, for the enemy could easily mow us down with a single machine-gun. But our Feldwebel had already went ahead, and we were forced to follow.


Luck was on our side. We crossed the bridge without a single shot fired. The Englishmen must've fallen back or had been eradicated by the German artillery. Once we had taken our new positions, Richard came with another of his humorous remarks: "Mr. Feldwebel, when soon you return to Germany, make sure to give them our greetings."

Our Feldwebel didn't really understand the remark and asked what he meant. Richard answered that this piece of art, which our Feldwebel had just performed, he wouldn't be able to repeat with the same fortunate outcome. Our Feldwebel believed that it could easily be repeated, and Richard let him stay in that faith.

The following day our Feldwebel received a bullet which entered through his mouth and exited through the cheek - a lucky bullet which secured his ticket back to Germany. Richard's prediction came true quicker than we had expected."

THE WORST AND TERRIBLE EXECUTION AT LANDSBERG IN MAY 1946.

War crime hangings at Landsberg in May 1946. With special thanks to Traugott Vitz for his help with this article. Over two days at the end of May 1946, 28 German war criminals were hanged at Landsberg am Lech prison in Germany (US War Criminals Prison No. 1). The Dachau concentration camp was liberated by two divisions of the U.S. Seventh Army on the 29th of April, 1945.  40 members of it staff were tried at the camp by a US General Military Court, presided over by Brigadier General John Lenz. The trials lasted from the 15th of November to the 13th of December 1945.   36 defendants received the death sentence. Eight of these sentences were reduced to terms of imprisonment by the Reviewing Authority, the remaining 28 death sentences being confirmed. The trial went under the designation “USA against Martin Gerhard Weiß (Weiss) et al.”, Case No. 000-50-2. Very cruel. They literally had a game, where they tossed Chinese babies in the air and impaled them on their bayonets. Japanese soldiers had this game wherein the one who killed the most civillians in one night, won. The rapes, tortures and murders of men, women, elders and infants were unprecedented in modern history. Even the Germans didn’t engage in the kind of mass-civillian torture like the Japanese did. (The Germans were generally considered more evil though, because they denied an entire ‘race’ the basic right to exist and killed them with industrial efficiency, the epitome of emptiness and lack of any empathy) The Rape of Nanking, as it is called, was one of the worst atrocities in human history. The Brutality Execution " UN Rights Council Decries Surge in Iran Executions"

The U.N. Human Rights Council denounced Tuesday the rising numbers of executions in Iran, including of people who received the capital punishment in connection with protests that have rocked the country. The top United Nations rights body approved a resolution voicing "deep concern at the reported surge in the number of executions, including of individuals sentenced to death in relation to their alleged involvement in the recent protests." The resolution, which also extended the mandate of the U.N. special rapporteur on the rights situation in Iran for another year, passed with 23 of the council's 47 members voting in favor. Another 16 abstained, and eight opposed the text, including China, Cuba, Pakistan and Vietnam. Iran's ambassador Ali Bahreini took the floor to slam the resolution as a "weaponization of human rights as a foreign policy tool." The resolution echoed strong international condemnation over the country's crackdown on the protest movement
